War of 1812

Collection Info
Vintage illustration of two large war ships titled A Scene on Lake Ontario

These documents from the War of 1812 include a letter of surrender during the Battle of York (April 27, 1813), a map of the "seat of war", a portrait of British commander Sir Isaac Brock, a sketch of warring ships and a broadside declaring victory for the British in the Siege of Detroit.

The Battle of York was one of many skirmishes in the War of 1812. The battle started and ended on April 27, 1813 when Americans invaded what is now Parkdale. The forces occupied York (now Toronto) for six days. After hundreds of deaths of the destruction of Fort York (by retreating soldiers), the local militia signed “Terms of Capitulations” to formalize surrender.
