Original Toronto Star caption: A Hugh Portrait of Josyf Cardinal Slipyj; leader of the world's 8;000;000 Ukrainian Catholics; towered over the open-air High Mass celebrated by Canadian leaders of the church in Toronto June 27. The empty throne placed below the picture symbolized Pope Paul's cancellation of Slipyj's plans to attend a synod of the North American bishops of the Ukrainian rite. Slipyj and his church; the largest and oldest of the eastern churches in full communion with Rome; are pressing for recognition as a fully autonomus body; under the Pope; with power to choose their own bishops and regulate their own internal affairs.
