Original Toronto Star caption: Abandon ship call came this afternoon when the Seafarers International Union seamen went on strike in their bid for a 40-hour week. These crewmen walked off coal carrier Soodoc in Toronto harbor. Oil-carrier Elmbranch was the only other ship in Toronto affected by the strike. Four SIU-manned ships are due in Toronto tonight. Union will picket struck ships but not the Toronto waterfront; SIU spokesman said.
