Original Toronto Star caption: Worst blow at the allies since they landed in Italy came Dec. 2 when 30 German bombers swept over the Italian port of Bari and left 17 cargo vessels burning and in a sinking condition. Henry L. Stimson; U.S. secretary of war; said five American ships were lost and casualties totalled 1;000 killed and wounded. Lack of fighter protection caused the devastation; it was reported. These two freighters were left burning fiercely.
