Original Toronto Star caption: Jehovah's witnesses; 22;000 of them; attended the opening session today of their five-day convention. By the time the meeting opened; delegates filled most of the 20;0667 seats in the CNE grandstand and more than 1;000 latecomers spilled over into the south-outside bleachers. Facing the stands; sturdy white letters announced the name of the meeting: God's Sons of Liberty district assembly of Jehovah's Witnesses. Live trees flanked the flower-decked speakers' platform and delegates listened intently to chairman L. K. Greenlees; a Canadian based at Witnesses' international headquarters in New York. An interpreter translated all the speeches into sign language for deaf delegates to the convention.
