Original Toronto Star caption: Eyelids are clamped open by surgical clamps to prevent patient blinking while surgeons cut away two-thirds of the old cornea. The Patient remains conscious under a local anesthetic, and when the scar tissue had been removed he told doctors he was able to see. The plastic cornea is set inside a flange of tissue of the old cornea, then sewn into place. The operation took 52 minutes to perform, and if it is successful patient's other eye will be treated also.
