Original Toronto Star caption: Whitby - Gil Nieuwendyk is going to have a tough act to follow in his second year of senior lacrosse. That's because his first season with the Brooklin Redmen club was almost perfect. The 22-year-old Whitby resident not only picked up the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series rookie of the year award; he also captured the league's scoring title. Nieuwendyk had his accomplishments honored recently at the lacrosse assocation's annual convention in Niagara Falls. Both awards came as a surprise; he says. I wasn't sure if I had won the scoring title or not; it was close going into the final game and I knew I had to score big if I wanted a chance.
