Original Toronto Star caption: A display of fascinating African face masks graces the Marianne Friedland Gallery at 122 Scollard St. until Feb. 22. The owner holds a Bambara mask with a Congo mask at extreme left. Star art critic Gary Michael Dault says on of the awesome qualities possessed by African tribal craftsmen was their way of animating inert materials. Most of the exhibition consists of masks shown alongside combs; pipes; and an assortment of fetishes. This art made something happen; Marianne Friedland says.
