Original Toronto Star caption: Debris and fire-scarred walls mark cellblock area where 20 prisoners in a city hall jail at Saint John died last night. Seven short-term prisoners were injured; along with six policemen and a fireman. Police described many of the victims as petty criminals or drunks in for the night. They said the fire was set in a single padded cell. Police could be heard radioing frantically for keys.
