Original Toronto Star caption: At two minutes to midnight on the first Sunday in June; the head of Canada's biggest steel company and the rest of the night shift let out a whoop as a shimmering; white-hot; moving ribbon of steel crept slowly into view and cooled to a pulsating fiery red glow. Hard hat firmly in place; Peter Gordon; chairman of Stelco Inc. and a steel man for 35 years; was watching the birth of the world's first brand new steel complex in eight years - the culmination of the first stage of the largest single project ever undertaken in the history of the Canadian steel industry.
