Original Toronto Star caption: Operators in the Lambton fields; in southwestern Ontario; may seek government assistance for further exploration and deepening of producing wells as a possible means of relieving the present shortage of petroleum. The Petrolia-Oil Springs area was the scene of the first producing well in North America; and a large quantity of oil is still being pumped in the district. Here is shown a producing well that towers over Petrolia United church in the centre of the town. It is owned by Mayor J. C. Kerr.
