Original Toronto Star caption: Where canal gate collapsed. At least ninemen were killed, twelve are in hospital badly crushed and several others were more or less seriously injured at Lock No. 6 of the new Welland canal to-day, when a 500-ton gate collapsed as it was being placed in position by derricks. At the TOP is shown Locks No. 5 and 6 with Lock No. 7 in the background. The depth of the canal at this point is 130.8 feet, almost the same depth as the Horseshoe Falls. At the Bottom is a map showing where the accident occurred. The diagram in the Centre shows how the canal will lift shipping from the low level of Lake Ontario to the higher level of lake Onatario to the higher level of Lake Erie.
