Original Toronto Star caption: Open Canadian Engineering Triumph. Canada's greatest engineering project, the Welland ship canal, joining the Great Lakes, was officially opened this afternoon by Lord Bessborough, governor-general of Canada, in the presence of men who guide one-fourth of the world's population. With the opening, the most gigantic undertaking of a long series og developments which are to make the St. Lawrence water system the greatest navigable inland waterway and the most-used marine transportation route in the world, is complete. No. (1) shows a view of the canal looking from lock six, just as it appeared when the governor general officially declared the Welland canal open. Flags were flying from the masts of the Lemoyne as it passed through. The massed band of the Royal Canadian Regiment palyed O Canada and Land of Hope and Glory. The governor-general took the royal salute.
