Original Toronto Star caption: Thirty - four grains boats held up in Welland Canal by Low Water. Above are seen views of some of the thirty-four grain boats which were held up in the Welland canal last week as a result of the unusually low water levels which have recently been brought about by the Chicago steal and other causes. Al though the vessels are loading more lightly than in previous years one or other of them nevertheless strikes bottom in the canal every so often, with the result that all traffic is tied up until they can be refloated. Thousands of dollars are thus being lost as a result of delays and curtailed cargoes in the case of the factories when water normally used for generating electrical power has to be diverted to raise the canal levels.
