Original Toronto Star caption: Old and new in rail yards. With 179 switches and controls; Fred Pace (top) directs trains from the John St. control tower. Al Dignard (left) works in Cabin D; just west of Bathurst St.; where the controls are manual. The levers fromerly switched tracks by cables; now many of them operate signal lights and the tracks are switched more easily by switch tenders (at bottom).
