Original Toronto Star caption: Rare rhino debuts at the metro zoo. Vinu the rhino--all 2;300 pounds--is fed by overseer Toby Styles at Metro Zoo; where Vinu took up residence today. Only Indian rhinoceros in Canada; he's one of about 50 held by zoos around world. A further 500 are estimated to be in the wild. Bought last fall for $51;000 from WEst Germany's Rhur Zoo; 5-year-old Vinu is now worth $85;000 and his pen will be surrounded by security guards. His single horn; powdered; is prized in Asia as an aphrodisiac; fetching high prices in Asian pharmacies and causing poaching which has led to near-extinction of his species. Mate is expected from India in 8 months.
