Original Toronto Star caption: 1980 Jeep. With orange racing stripes, owned by a 40-year-old woman: Well, here's a woman who wants to go off the road into the rough terrain. She likes rough going and trail blazing. She's rebellious. Her politics are probably on the left side of the fence. She identifies with things that are rebellious. She's probably into some trailblazing activity, and she's probably not alone in this because jeeps are a sort of a cult. Four wheel drivers are very religious about it and she's into the movement. You tend to think of jeeps as a masculine kind of vehicle, but there's a self sufficiency about it and for a female to get into that she's got to be a very independent thinking woman, certainly willing to take risks and to put her whole self on the line. She's not like an entrepreneur who will only risk a few bucks. Probably what she is doing is involving her whole sense of identity and her whole self. - Sally Barnes, head of the Ontario advisory council on the status of women.
