Original Toronto Star caption: Santa Claus was Jewish at a children's party yesterday in St. Timothy's Anglican Church in North York-Alderman Irv Chapley, who read a book on Christian symbolism while he waited for his cue to appear. He doesn't see Santa as a religious symbol, but a man who brings love and joy to children.

Black activist Richard Dildy - who was once arrested for proclaiming Santa a fraud during Toronto's annual Santa Claus parade - is dead at age 47. He died of kidney and liver failure in Wellesley Hospital Friday. The United States-born insurance salesman spent most of his life trying to convince parents to stop telling children that Santa Claus is coming to town. [Incomplete]

Real traffic stoppers in Scarborough yesterday were Marjorie and Harry Gordaneer in their Santa Claus costumes. Mrs. Gordancer, who has been a crossing guard for 20 years and is president of the Metro school crossing guards' organization, has been handing out candy canes to youngsters at her crossing on Clonmore Dr. Husband Harry, who's an area supervisor with the borough's board of education, has been playing Santa at a number of schools this week.
