They carried flags and welcoming placards; sang Happy Birthday for the couple's one-year-old son William who was back home in England. There was even a Diana lookalike promenading through Parliament Hill crowds. There were functions galore - the opening of a new police headquarters; a state dinner; a barbecue with 1;000 Canadian notables; a Kiwanis Club luncheon; a trip by motor launch on the Rideau Canal.
