Joseph Shepard House

Lot 16, Con. 1 West. Burndale Ave - 90. Built by Joseph Shepard I (1766-1837) around 1835. Shepard settled lot 16 in 1802, and by 1830 owned a grist mill and a saw mill on the Don River's west branch. Shepard was a friend to William Lyon Mackenzie and, though he died before December 1837, his sons and wife participated in the rebellion. In 1838, Colonel Van Egmond (the leader of the rebels) sought shelter from Joseph's widow in this house, where he was captured by government troops. The house became a designated heritage property in 1994 and still stands today.
