In the first ed. of John Harris's books for youth, Marjorie Moon attributes the authorship to William Mackenzie. In the revised 1992 ed., Moon says that this attribution is incorrect and the author is unknown. Cover imprint reads 1814. The stories are narrated by a fictitious old woman named Margery Meanwell.
