Original Toronto Star caption: This Dieppe hero, Lieut.-Col. Cecil Merritt of Vancouver, commanded the South Saskatchewan Regiment. Now a prisoner of the Germans, he was the first Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross in this war. Although twice wounded, and before taken prisoner, he continued to direct the unit's operations. His gallantry and leadership will never be forgotten by the men of his regiment. His wife and family are making their home in Belleville, Ont., for the duration.
