Toronto Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, and of the Blind Toronto, January, 1862 A school for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, and of the Blind has been in operation for more than three years in Toronto. This School, the only one in the Province, depends on its support on private subscriptions, and an annual grant from the Legislature. [...] It is believed that there are in Upper Canada, from 800 to 1000 Deaf and Dumb, and from 500 to 600 Blind. At present there are in this school: Deaf and Dumb Boaders 17, Deaf and Dumb day pupils 6, Deaf and Dumb 23 Blind boarders: 4 Total: 27 The applications for admission, which have been reluctantly rejected in consequence of the want to funds, have been no less than 86, namely, 72 Deaf and Dumb, and 14 Blind.
