The town is now in bad shape, with at least 25 per cent of its workers unemployed. Cobalt was built in haphazard fashion, with winding, hilly streets (at left), during a mineral rush that began in 1903. one hope is that another company will step in to keep the old silver refinery operating. High silver prices would help.
