Original Toronto Star caption: Ignominious end, Pole-vaulter Bill Olson lies on the mat after failing in his third and final attempt at 5.70 metres (18 feet, 8 1/2 inches). Though he improved on his world indoor record for the third time in five weeks a week ago in Albuquerque, N.M., vaulting 5.89 metres, he admitted that for some reason, it just wasn't there at last night's meet. The abilene, Texas, native was the focus of much attention during th days leading up to 24th annual Games, and was expected to be the showpiece performer. But, in the end, he was unable to live up to his billing.
