Forty-one nutcrackers are lined up military-fashion on the shelves of a glass unit in his apartment hallway. Schafer, a stage designer whose current credits include Supporting Cast at the Teller's Cage and the upcoming Singin' and Dancin' Tonight at the Royal Alex, is fascinated by the nutcrackers' raw, bold colors.
