Kidney specialist Dr. Paul Tam vowed to bring a $1 million kidney dialysis unit to Scarborough after Gary Belz died of a heart attack due to kidney failure more than two years ago. Tam said if Belz, then 37, hadn't had to wait a month for dialysis treatment at a downtown hospital, he would still be alive today. Robert Stephens cosults with a patient in his office. During one weekend, Dr. Stephens talked by phone with 40 patients, was six in his office, visited eight at home and three in hospital, all at about a $3 hourly rate. Not rapacious for overtime work, he says.
