New procedures at the Canadian Johns-Manville Ltd. plant in Scarborough have all but eliminated the hazard of concentrations of asbestos fibres in the plant air, Dr. Paul Kotin (left), company vice-president in charge of health, safety and environment, told a news conference yesterday. G. P. Loubert, president of the firm, is next to him. New Democratic Party Leader Stephen Lewis (far right) challenged some of Loubert's statements on meeting Ontario government guidelines.

Victor Ling is world- renowned for his work in cancer research. Last year he received both the Dr. Josef Steiner Prize in Europe and the General Motors Kettering Prize - recognized as the top international award for cancer research - at a June dinner in Washington, D.C. Ling helped discover how cancer cells resist the effects of tumor-destroying drugs by using a tiny protein. The protein ejects drugs from the cell before they have time to act. Ling spent years refining and confirming the discovery, which has sparked a search for the right decoy drug capable of fooling the protein and allowing cancer-fighting drugs to slip in for the kill.

Eyes... right! Not lacking for admirers, Fred Lewis, 55, is all spit and polish in World War I cavalry sergeant's uniform as he marches on Saturday in the Royal Canadian Legion's walkathon to raise $25,000 for the Metro Toronto Legion Lodge. Lewis, who retired in 1971 after 33 years in the army, acquired the uniform during his travels and wore it to publicize Legion's 50th anniversary. Claire (left) and Lori McMahon were comrades-in-arms.
