Real traffic stoppers in Scarborough yesterday were Marjorie and Harry Gordaneer in their Santa Claus costumes. Mrs. Gordancer, who has been a crossing guard for 20 years and is president of the Metro school crossing guards' organization, has been handing out candy canes to youngsters at her crossing on Clonmore Dr. Husband Harry, who's an area supervisor with the borough's board of education, has been playing Santa at a number of schools this week.

Last summer, he sold encyclopedias. This summer, university student Mark Dingman is selling himself - as the first prize in an unusual raffle. Dingman 21, of Toronto, has decided to raffle himself - or more precisely, 16 hours of his time - to make money for school. I wanted to run my own business. This took minimum capitalization and had minimal risk, should it fail, said Dingman, a McGill University student. And it seems like a good skill to learn, to sell yourself. Dingman is going door-to-door with his Student Slaves raffle and a very professional pitch. Tickets go for $1.99 each (or three for $5) and there are 200 in each draw. The first raffle is scheduled for Tuesday and the winner gets Dingman for 16 hours to do anything from cleaning ovens to fixing eavestroughs.

Mark Baker, student president at the school, had earlier recommended a race-relations department to deal with the issue. We need it to sort out differences so they don't escalate to this point, Baker, a Grade 13 student, said yesterday. He is being credited for defusing last week's crisis by going on the school's public address system.

Home is a castle, or soon will be for Stuart family of Donlea Dr. in East York. Charles Stuart has taken out a 20-year lease on a castle near Inverness, Scotland, built in 1625 by the third Earl of Moray. The rent - $95.50 a year, but Stuart says it will need about $38,000 worth of work to make it habitable. It has a ghost, but a friendly one, Stuart said. He and his wife, Elizabeth, show off a photo of their new home with daugher Lucie, who is 13.

Ben Cramer is the man who set up the computer system at City Hall to centralize all the information from all the city departments. Anyone who wants to find out how much has been spent on a particular program has to do no more than push a computer button to get the answer in seconds.
