Shepard House, York Cemetery

Lot 17, Con. 1 West. Yonge St. Michael Shepard house, now York Cemetery Office and caretaker's home. Built in the 1850s by Michael Shepard on his large farm. Michael Shepard ran the saw mill owned by his father, Joseph Shepard. He took part in the Mackenzie Rebellion in 1837, casting bullets for the rebels, largely because of his father?s close friendship with Mackenzie. He and his brother Thomas were captured, escaped from Fort Henry (in Kingston) into the United States, and were finally pardoned and allowed to return to Canada in 1846. The cemetery in which the house now stands was opened in 1948. The house is a designated heritage property.
