Original Toronto Star caption: 69 horses die in worst-ever Canadian racetrack disaster. An early-morning blaze last Thursday at Mohawk Raceway in Campbellville; Ont.; killed 69 racehorses worth an estimated $2 million. Only 11 horses were saved by a security guard who risked his life to open stalls. It's the same as losing a loved one; one distraught owner said. A faulty furnace is the suspected cause of the fire.
