One of them is Bert Birch; who pilots the Empress of Japan the 4;158 nautical miles between Vancouver and Tokyo. He started out on the run from Edmonton to Yellowknife; flying a DC-3; in 1938: and still looks as though he'd be as much at home in a Yukon bar as in the Tokyo Hilton. When he retires; in two years; he might get a part-time job as a commercial pilot.
