Notes
The three orphaned Clairville children of Clairville Castle were left to the care of their wise and judicious maiden aunt who corrected their false prejudices so that the family "became the love and admiration of the country around".
Emily Wilmont, the seven-year-old heroine of the second story, was not so fortunate. Her first act of concealment, subsequently leading her to be the accomplice of a thief, left her with such an overpowering sense of guilt that she went into a decline and died.
Includes: (pages [71]-100) The dangers of concealment : exemplified in the history of Emily Wilmont; extract from Dr. Blair on the importance of order in the distribution of time on pages 101-107.
The four text illustrations are engraved on wood by Thomas Bewick.
