NotesPhilip Montague was born in Jamaica and orphaned at the age of six. The faithful servant, Caesar, escorted the child to the home of his wise guardian in England, and remained in the household "rather as a friend than as a servant". The copperplate frontispiece bears the date November 1st, 1827.
