Relates the fortunes of a shipwrecked family as they adapt to life on an island with abundant animal and plant life.
The translator's notes, dated 1870, states that he followed the French translation of Madame Voiart.
This translation by W.H.D. Adams was first published in 1870 in response to a statement by Charlotte Young in Macmillan's magazine, July, 1869, and a reply in the Spectator, July, 10, 1869, which asked for a new and complete translation.
