Vie De Denys Marquis de vitré capitaine de vaisseau, patriae impendere vitam

Denis, Marquis de Vitre, a French Canadian in command of the ship La Renommee was captured by the English in 1757, 'held prisoner in England, and in 1759 taken on the expedition against Canada. He is alleged by historians to have piloted Wolfe up the St. Lawrence to the capture of Quebec. This document, a defence of De Vitre, written probably 'by a relative, and based on De Vitre's own statements denies that he acceded to the English demand to pilot the vessels. It relates his sufferings from 1757 until his death, and 'includes his efforts to secure compensation from the English government. Transcript available here
