Original Toronto Star caption: To Outgrow Our available in English translation. But while the experience of the birth of Pooh in 1964; Oe says in fluent English; was initially difficult to accept; it changed my life. Pooh; who's now finished a high school for the mentally retarded; has been an inspiration. Oe burst onto the Japanese literary scene in 1958 at the age of 23 while he was a student of French literature at Tokyo University by winning the prestigious Akutagawa Prize (named after the writer whose work is known in the West for the two stories that the great director Akira Kurosawa combined in his movie Rashomon). Oe's earlier work was strongly influenced by Mark Twain [Incomplete]
