Original Toronto Star caption: From pick and shovel to art. Gio Batta Garlatti employes his skills as a sculptor and cabinet maker to restore and reproduce antiques. The 40-year-old craftsman emigrated from Italy in 1956 and worked with a pick and shovel and at raw carpentry before he was able to set up his own shop in Markham. Here he works on angels; copied from a 16th-century work. He has been assigned to create presentation boxes to contain copies of book Between Friends; Canada's contribution to U.S. Bicentennial.
