Original Toronto Star caption: Most spectacular event of carnival is the ice canoe race across the floes and freezing waters of the St. Lawrence to Levis and back. The race; two miles in all; recalls the days before bridges spanned the St. Lawrence and rivermen were the life-line to may communities. Their enemy is a powerful current which can put the paddlers a mile out of their way in just a matter of a few minutes.
