Original Toronto Star caption: The Mermaid Inn at Rye occupies a site where a hostelry stood as far back as the 13th century. That inn was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1377 when the French torched the town. The Mermaid itself dates back to 1420. The interior has dark oak walls and smoke stained beams.
