Original Toronto Star caption: A salute is taken by President de Gaulle from the crew and officers of the French warship Colbert, which had just docked at Quebec city in 1967. The former French leader's tour of Quebec province ended rather abruptly after the then prime minister, Lester Pearson, rebuked the general for advocating a separate Quebec. The reaction of Canadians -- both inside and outside Quebec -- was swift and vehement: All denounced de Gaulle. De Gaulle said that since he wasn't welcome, he would cut his visit short.
