Inscribed l.r.: Wm. Armstrong / 1909 [?]; On verso of former mount: Loss of [cropped] / 1868 [corrected in a later hand to 1869]  Looking north west; foot of Simcoe St. at extreme right; G.T.R. Elevator & behind it Northern Railway Elevator in background.  Key on lower part of former mat.  Former mount and part of former mat bearing key in Accession File.

736-WINTER SCENE ON TORONTO BAY, 1869-Showing wreck of old "Provincial," formerly a freight steamer. She was sold to the R.C.Y.C. in 1860, fitted up as a clubhouse, and moored on the bay shore near the foot of Simcoe street. In the winter of 1869 she broke away from her moorings and was frozen in the bay, becoming a wreck, which was blown up by order of the Corporation. Water color by Wm. Armstrong, C.E., Toronto. Size 9 x 13.
