Jacob Cummer House

Lot 23, Con. 2 East. Cummer Ave. Built by Jacob Cummer II around 1850 when he was manager of the mill in this valley on the north side of Cummer at the Don River. Jacob Cummer I (1767-1841) and his family arrived from Pennsylvania and received lot 18, concession 1 east from the Crown in 1801, and purchased the south half of lot 19 in 1804. The Cummers were men of many talents; Jacob I was listed as a veterinary surgeon and inventor, Jacob II as an insurance agent, a tinsmith, a shingle manufacturer, and was the first Willowdale postmaster. Jacob Cummer I was also involved in the construction of the Willowdale Methodist Episcopal Church (also known as Cummer Church, or later Willowdale United Church). William Scrace, a superintendent of the North York Market, also lived here.
