Original Toronto Star caption: The mayor of whitby for the past nine years, 43-year-old Desmond Newman, walks to the platform last night after winning the Liberal nomination in Ontario South riding for the next provincial election, expected next year. He took 570 votes, compared with 138 for Toronto lawyer John Coates, 51, and 55 for Norah Geraghty, 29, a Greenwood environmentalist. The meeting later made it unanimous.
