Last summer, he sold encyclopedias. This summer, university student Mark Dingman is selling himself - as the first prize in an unusual raffle. Dingman 21, of Toronto, has decided to raffle himself - or more precisely, 16 hours of his time - to make money for school. I wanted to run my own business. This took minimum capitalization and had minimal risk, should it fail, said Dingman, a McGill University student. And it seems like a good skill to learn, to sell yourself. Dingman is going door-to-door with his Student Slaves raffle and a very professional pitch. Tickets go for $1.99 each (or three for $5) and there are 200 in each draw. The first raffle is scheduled for Tuesday and the winner gets Dingman for 16 hours to do anything from cleaning ovens to fixing eavestroughs.

Big Jim Leeson parks his Cessna Skyplane, zips up his jacket and goes to pay a house call. By flying, Wiarton's Dr. Leeson figures he's beaten one of the biggest problems facing the progessive rural doctor today: Isolation from his colleagues and the big city medical centres. With his Cessna he can hop down to Toronto in an hour for a lecture. Still, he admits, a rural practice might not be every doctor's cup of tea, I'm a farm boy myself...I'm used to it, he says.

Ehrlich's father, Israel, who had operated the Bayview Ave. shop for 22 years, was gunned down Dec. 8. Now, says Isaac, the store holds too many memories for the family to keep it operating.

Refinishing pine tool moulds is just one of the projects 27-year-old Bill Don has taken on since he and he and his wife Bev decided to fulfil his life's dream, to run their own store. Ardith One, on Yonge St., features antiques and artifacts the pair has collected over the past two years. The young couple say that mixing marriage and business has given them something to work on for the rest of their lives.
