Original Toronto Star caption: It's official: Victor Rice, chairman of Massey-Ferguson Ltd., is now chairman of Varity Corp. He holds a flag emblazoned with the new corporate name, which was approved by shareholders at the company's annual meeting in Toronto yesterday. Rice, however, was challenged at the meeting by a financial analyst who figured Varity was ripe for a takeover.

Ontario symbol? Paul and Denese Coulbeck-Gipson have almost 1,000 signatures on a petition to have the bluebird named Ontario's official bird. They say that with its cheery song, it's a perfect symbol of all that's good about the province.

Panel controlling all locks in Rexdale's new $15 million jail is tested by Supt. W. L. Barber yesterday. Known officially as the Metropolitan Toronto West Detention Centre it will help ease chronic overcrowding at Toronto (Don) Jail - but my almost doubling its capacity. Officials are facing the challenge of housing 340 inmates in a building designed for 200. The cells will contain two prisoners instead of one.
