Original Toronto Star caption: Everything was backwards when Roy Teal; system supervisor at the Ontario Hydro control centre at Richview substation near Malton; examined instruments last night. U.S. generated power had flashed wrong way through Cornwall; circled through Southern Ontario and back through Niagara Falls. Normal flow is reverse surge disrupted system after system; shot down eastern seaboard to Florida; west to Texas and Montana. Whole East blacked out (see map). Ontario power was drained; even tho' grid system was to prevent this.
