Original Toronto Star caption: In the emergency ward; the most hectic area in the over-burdened 246-bed Northwestern General Hospital; head nurse Jane Conaghan (left) and nurse Pat Carpenter wheel stretcher carrying Mark Wellman. Every inch of the hospital is being used to capacity; but nevertheless patients must often lie in beds in the corridor. The two small emergency rooms are able to handle 140 patients daily.
