Original Toronto Star caption: Burned-out shell is all that s left of a service station after fire in Cobalt yesterday razed heart of town. Dozens of homes and six stores were destroyed by blaze; fed by dry; wooden buildings and framed by gusty winds. More than 100 volunteer firemen from surrounding areas helped fight blaze; but fire officials admitted we were helpless. Cobalt was once a Northern Ontario silver boomtown; but economic slump that started in 1930s left with a population of about 2;200. About quarter of residents were left homeless. Water bombers were also called in.
